What is the connection between AI chatbots and loneliness?
AI chatbots can offer companionship and emotional support through simulated conversations but they cannot replace human relationships. I'm passionate about highlighting the need for genuine human connection through a gamified digital experience.
Overview
This project brings awareness to the negative effects of relying on AI chatbots such as Character.ai and it's connection to loneliness. The goal was to create an informative yet gamified experience that implements AI to multiple aspects of the project.
AI Tools Used
Adobe Firefly to generate artworks for character profiles
ChatGPT to aid in content writing
Character.ai's UI as design inspiration
Hypothesis
Character.ai, a newer AI platform, has become popular for offering virtual companionship and support, but it also raises privacy, ethical, and mental health concerns. The platform uses internet data to imitate real-life personalities, applying specific language and conversational styles to make interactions feel real. This fits with society’s growing need for digital support and connection, especially as face-to-face friendships decline and loneliness rises.
However, some worry that users might become too attached to AI companions, replacing human relationships with digital ones. This dependency could increase social isolation and mental health issues, particularly for those seeking an escape from real life. Character.ai’s use of public data and advanced AI models like those of OpenAI’s GPT also brings up concerns around privacy, possible misinformation, and exposure to inappropriate content.
Process
The process started with conducting the initial research by asking lots of questions and finding statistics to identify the key challenges. Our team then narrowed down the research findings to create a system diagram. Afterwards, our team created wireframes and prototypes, testing them with users to collect feedback. Through multiple iterations, I refined the design, enhancing both usability and functionality to align with user needs and project objectives.
Research Findings
Character.ai has 187.1M total visits worldwide as of October 2024
The United States consists of 23.77% of Character.ai's total visits
53.42% of users are between the ages of 18-24

Design: Chatting With Gabriella
The main gamified feature of Chatbot.ai is choosing a character to chat with. Users can select from 1-3 dialogue options while interacting with Gabriella, who will eventually guide them to the Warning screen to proceed to the informative section.
Design: Warning!
As the player progresses throughout the game, they will stumble upon the Warning screen to let the user know that they have selected an option that emphasizes our team's hypothesis. Typically, warnings are used to alert about potential risks, such as harmful content, security threats, or actions that may lead to unintended consequences. Warnings help guide user behaviour, ensuring safety and preventing errors. Clear warnings allows users to make informed decisions which ultimately minimizes negative outcomes. The whole premise of Chatbot.ai is to allow the user to create their own decisions on how they would like to deal with their loneliness.
Design: The System
Once the warning screen disappears, it moves into the information pages of this gamified web experience. The user can decide to unpack the impact of using AI chatbots or they can choose to continue with the game. This whole experience allows users to make informed decisions about their AI chatbot usage.
Outcome
Through extensive research and multiple rounds of design iterations, our team successfully crafted a product that raises awareness about the link between AI chatbots and loneliness, as more people turn to digital interactions. While chatbots offer temporary companionship, they may worsen feelings of isolation, limiting genuine human connections. Recognizing this effect helps encourage healthier use of AI and better emotional well-being. While the tight deadline rushed the decision-making process, leading to overlooked details, the project provided our team with a rewarding experience that fosters continuous learning.
Next Steps
Implement A Concrete Design System
Implementing a design system is crucial for UX design projects because it ensures consistency, efficiency, and scalability across digital products. It provides a unified set of guidelines, components, and assets, streamlining collaboration, reducing redundant work, and improving the user experience by maintaining cohesive visual and functional elements throughout the product.
Expand On The Chat Function
Due to the chat function having a limited amount of dialogue, the experience was not as immersive as our team would like. In the future, our team plans on creating a more immersive experience that truly connect with those who are feeling lonely.
Conduct Usability Studies
Our team can conduct usability studies to further understand how our target audience engages with the product. By watching users interact, our team can uncover challenges, confusing features, and areas of improvement that might not be apparent through internal reviews or theoretical analysis. The feedback gathered leads to better design decisions, greater user satisfaction, and fewer issues after launch. Ultimately, it helps create a product that aligns with user needs, increasing its chances of success in the market.
